In the United States, the American flag is often used as a decorating motif. What seems odd to me is that the American flag is also decoration in Japan: check, plaid, paisley, American flag. You can find the flag on lots of different items here. (As well as the Union Jack.)
On the one hand, it is cool that my country has such influence in the world. On the other hand, it seems a little disrepectful. “Honey, let’s buy an American flag throw rug and walk all over it!”
What’s also weird is that the decorated items are basically limited to American and British flags. (Although I did see earrings with various flags and soccer balls on them, presumably for World Cup celebrations.)
Can you imagine if other countries’ flags were decorations? A Saudi Arabian pencil case, anyone?
