101_4613Well, as a sort of April Fool’s joke, the tax went up on the first of the month. And we have a handy little visual to illustrate it.

It went up three percent to eight percent.  However, what I did not count on is that many places took the opportunity to raise prices more than 3 percent.  For example, the price of a child’s movie ticket went from 1,000 yen to 1,100 yen.  My math skills ain’t great, but that is more than three percent.  I know movies aren’t a necessity, but they sure are fun.

According to my trusty Kodomo Shinbun, we have it lucky in Japan.

SWEDEN——–25%

DENMARK——25%

FINLAND———24%

ITALY————–22%

SPAIN————21%

NETHERLANDS-21%

U.K.—————–20%

FRANCE———–20%

GERMANY———19%

SWITZERLAND—8%

SOUTH KOREA–8%

U.S.A. (New York)-8.875

So I guess we got it good…….for now.

Luckily taking a walk is still free, although I hear that the government is planning to tax walking.  It’s going to be called a tax hike.
