What makes it so wonderful is that it is the first book to win the prestigious Caldecott medal. The Caldecott is for the best artwork in a book, and you can see the illustration of Eve is quite mesmerizing.

As you can see, the English is old-fashioned, very old-fashioned.  I tried reading it to my son and gave up.  Then I tried reading it to myself and gave up.

It was originally published in 1937, so I imagine my parents’ generation pouring through this book.  The library book dates from 1966–it’s a reprint.  That is still pretty darn old and I was very careful with it.  I don’t want to return a ripped book!
